Manufacturing of Battery Cells requires a high level of cleanliness of the manufacturing environment and process. This is accomplished with the use of controlled environments over the manufacturing process, specially designed equipment and strict cleaning routines of the machines and the areas.

The controlled environments can be clean & dry rooms (for the critical process steps) but also other high cleanliness graded rooms. Monitoring and validation of these areas, equipment and activities is critical for the production of a safe and high quality product.

About the job
The role of Technical Cleanliness Expert is to establish a common standard of technical cleanliness to all the facilities of Northvolt, from the design phase of the facilities and the processes to the long term monitoring. Among other responsibilities, the Technical Cleanliness and Cleanroom Expert will audit and support the different departments and collaborate with Customer and Supplier Quality Engineers to meet the requirements of Northvolt customers and lay down clear requirements to our suppliers on regards to technical cleanliness.

About the team

This key role is within Northvolt's central quality team. The team consists of various experts within the broad area of quality, who are all working on improving the quality structure, ways of working and competence levels across all of Northolt's entities. The team is today split between the Stockholm and the Västerås location, but individuals can be based in any of Northvolts locations. Travels are required in line with business needs.

Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Ensures compliance with ISO 14644, ISO 16232 and VDA 19 for all critical Northvolt processes and environments
  • Supports the Process Engineering and Contruction teams with new and innovative ways to improve technical cleanliness in the lines
  • Performs audits and oversees the cleanroom validation and monitoring activities according to ISO 14644 and VDA 19, evaluates the results and proposes improvements in the lines
  • Audits the good working order of the cleanroom operations at all sites (HVAC system and maintenance, gowning processes, cleanroom cleaning, machine cleaning methods, materials entry and exit procedures etc.) at the relevant controlled environments
  • Supports local teams with expert trouble shooting knowledge in cases of deviations (root cause analysis, process analysis, new quality control methods, cleaning validation etc.)
  • Supports the Incoming Quality Control and Supplier Quality with audits to the suppliers, setting requirements and performing measurements on the incoming material and methods to improve the quality of the incoming material, outbound goods, packaging etc.
  • Performs trainings regarding technical cleanliness and raises concern regarding technical cleanliness company wide

  • Communicates the objectives status and deviations to Management

Skills & Requirements

We believe that you have :

  • Master’s degree in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Automation Engineering, Chemistry, Physics etc.
  • At least 3 years experience with cleanroom validation & contamination control activities in battery manufacturing or relevant industries
  • Excellent knowledge of:
    • ISO14644: Cleanrooms and controlled environments and cleanroom practices (from other roles in industries with controlled environments such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, micro-electronics, battery production, food, laboratories etc.)
    • VDA 19 Part 1: Inspection of technical cleanliness
    • VDA 19 Part 2: Technical cleanliness in Assembly
    • ISO 16232 Road vehicles: Cleanliness of components of fluid circuits
    • ZVEI: Guidelines for technical cleanliness in electrical engineering

Bonus points for:

  • Experience in industrial HVAC systems in construction, maintenance, validation

  • Knowledge in ISO 9001 and IATF 16949

  • Experience within quality and good knowledge in technical writing and reviewing of work instructions and validation documents

  • Experience with clean/controlled environments in the automotive industry

  • Experience in mass production

  • Experience in analytical techniques for Technical cleanliness

  • Basic knowledge of the battery production & the contamination risks per process

  • Experience in health and safety in similar environments

Other characteristics

  • Able to perform statistic evaluation of results
