Process Quality Engineer (Chemical Engineering)

Northvolt has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Process Quality Engineer Chemicals to join our Quality team in Skellefteå or Västerås.

In joining us you will play an important part from the very start in enabling supply of the first large scale European battery factory. Northvolt will play an important role in the transformation to a carbon free society. We are continuously building a team of experienced Quality Engineers and great leaders with industry background.

You will be in charge of ensuring quality of product in accordance with customer requirements, overseeing the Quality Control and testing plan, reviewing results and process performance for the Cathode material manufacturing operations. You will also be responsible for monitoring and analysis of complex data with the help of statistical process control tools as well as driving or contributing to improvement, optimization and problem solving activities.

The Process Quality Engineer will be an expert in quality management which includes deep knowledge in quality systems, i.e. ISO9001 and IATF16949, quality process design, continuous improvement, quality control and assurance, process robustness, six sigma and monitoring of quality performance etc.. You will play an important role to lead and co-ordinate quality monitoring and reporting, issue and crisis management as well as proactive quality planning and improvement. A background in crystallization or calcination processes is a strong merit.

In general, you have a long experience in quality management and have been driving large, innovative and challenging improvement projects internally and with external partners in the area of quality, six sigma, qualification & validation, improvements, efficiency and optimisation. Specifically, you have a deep understanding of working and cooperating cross-functionally in a multicultural environment with R&D, Production, Maintenance, Process Engineering, IT and Automation.

The candidate should be analytical and logical with an ability to identify opportunities and improvements to drive increased quality through data driven approaches, i.e. six sigma and statistical methodologies. The candidate should have strong technical abilities in order to succeed in this role.

R&D ****

The job in Västerås is in our pilot scale production where we are developing our new recipes and performing scale-up of them. You will work on a smaller scale compared to Skellefteå and continuously work with new products. By this you will set the basis for the work in our large scale production in Skellefteå.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure quality of product in accordance with customer requirements, oversee the Quality Control and testing plan, review results and process performance
  • Monitoring and analysis of complex data with the help of statistical process control tools.
  • Monitoring and analysis of internal and external quality problems, problem solving moderation of 8D reports
  • Creation and maintenance of Control plan with participation in FMEA analysis. Facilitate continuous updating of PFMEAs by working in multidisciplinary teams with process engineering, R&D etc.
  • Perform machine and process capability studies and lead the team members on SPC and quality process release activities.
  • Development and implementation of quality procedures and instructions
  • Taking a part in internal audit and release process audit, performing manufacturing process audits
  • Embrace risk based thinking within the team. Report and mitigate safety relevant issues within the team in the appropriate system.
  • Train production and process quality employees and support development of production documentation, e.g. SOPs
  • Be part of equipment commissioning team and deliver acceptance testing and qualification milestones of new process equipment and installation of additional production lines

Skills & Requirements

We believe that you have :

  • MSc degree in Chemistry/Manufacturing/Engineering
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience in similar role within high volume assembly/production, e.g., pharma, mining, food, metallurgy
  • Knowledge about FMEA, Control Plan, PPAP, SPC, MSA, Risk Management, Data analysis with statistical tools, drawings and special characteristics
  • Expert in problem solving processes, 8D, 5Why, Ishikawa, Pareto
  • Knowledge of quality requirements and standards of the automotive industry (IATF 16949:2016, VDA standards)

Bonus points for:

  • Experience in crystallization or calcination process
  • Certified six sigma professional green or black belt
  • Internal auditor certification for ISO9001 or VDA6.3
  • Experience from a multi-cultural and fast paced environment
  • Certified six sigma professional, i.e. green or black belt
