We are looking for an experienced and passionate Senior Analytical Chemist to join us in our mission to contribute to a greener future.

By joining us you will be a key player in building up our trace analysis laboratory, as well as developing and validating inspection methods to support departments across the wider Northvolt Labs Västerås Campus. You will also have an active role in establishing a centre of analytical expertise for battery materials analysis and characterisation within the heart of Northvolt’s R&D and pilot battery production site. The role is part of our bold Quality Control team based in Västerås, Sweden.

About the job

As Analytical Chemist in our team, you will primarily be responsible to lead and build up our trace analysis laboratory and its capability to serve as an analysis hub for several departments across our production site. You will be responsible to develop and validate inspection methods for several raw materials, intermediate products utilised/produced in our various battery cell production lines as well as water/environmental samples. With your analytical expertise, you get the chance to participate regularly in production investigations and failure analysis activities as well as working closely with our R&D teams to support the inspections of next-generation battery materials and upcoming battery cell formats.

We are looking for someone that enjoys working in the laboratory, building up capabilities and processes from scratch and who can effectively collaborate across group boundaries to find solutions to problems.

About the team

In this role you will be part of the technical development team within our wider Quality Control team at Northvolt Labs and play a key role in building up analytical expertise and competences within the team and the wider company. Our QC team, currently composed of 25 dedicated laboratory technicians, analytical chemists and engineers, is working on all aspects of quality inspections and cell production investigations. You will have access to a fully equipped laboratory with high-end analytical instruments that cover both chemical and mechanical analyses.

Skills & Requirements


  • PhD (or MSc with 5+ years of experience in a laboratory) in Analytical Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Natural Sciences or Engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience in R&D, quality control or an analytical laboratory in a relevant industry, e.g. Li-ion battery materials, polymers, inorganic materials, pharmaceutical, food or paper industries is preferred.
  • Proven track record of performing method development and validation projects in a laboratory environment.

  • Hands-on expertise in several of the following analytical techniques ICP-MS, ICP-OES, HPLC, ICP-AES, GC-MS.

  • Excellent English written and oral skills

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with battery materials (binder, graphite, silicon, electrolyte)
  • Knowledgeable in quality management systems, e.g. ISO 9001, IATF16949, TQM as well as Lean and six sigma.
  • Familiar with SPC, FMEA, Quality troubleshooting tools and problem-solving methodology
