UX Research & Design (junior/mid/senior level)

About the team

In the software team at Northvolt we work with building world-class software products and design user experiences that power our connected factories in Sweden and beyond. The team is based in Stockholm and we develop products across several different platforms, where some products are more mature and defined and some are still at a very early stage - Just as you would expect in a start-up (Yes, we still consider ourselves a start-up after 4 years in the energy & manufacturing industry!).

The team is a friendly, diverse, and knowledgeable mix of engineers, product managers, environment nerds, tech geeks, and foodies. And we think this is a great place to work! You get to take part in building the team and "design thinking-ways of working" - while doing fascinating user research, and designing solutions that connect machines to the digital world. Your work will empower expert users in the factories to navigate complicated processes efficiently and safely. You get to design products that enable the future of energy! (Sure, we are slightly biased and we might all have turned into battery nerds since starting to work at Northvolt - but it's really hard not to, you'll see!)

We believe that a tight collaboration between user research, UX design, and engineering is crucial in order to deliver world-class experiences for our users. Our users are Northvolt employees that work in our highly automated factories and cover a range of roles from management to analysts and technicians. Working closely with the users in the factories you will help your team to understand complicated use cases and build easy to use products!

Job Description

As UX researcher & designer, you will play an important role in supporting the translation of requirements into usable applications and features, whilst ensuring the applications are intuitive to use and easy to learn. Through research and design artefacts, you're bringing your team closer to the end-users.

In each of our product teams, our goal is to build great software products that help us solve user problems and address business objectives. This is where you will support the product team in coming up with designs and user flows that ensure the requirements are met, and the application is easy and intuitive to interact with. We're looking for a UX Designer who is also interested in performing both explorative and evaluative user research, since the day-to-day work will require a certain level of work dedicated to further understanding the users and problems presented by them.

Working together in a cross-functional team we believe you are curious to learn new things, as well as a driver to teach us more about UX methods and design and help us develop processes, ways of working, and habits that lead to excellent user experiences. We are around 2000 employees at Northvolt today and we will be more than 3000 employees within just a couple of years - will you help us grow and scale the experiences they have with us?

As a UX Researcher & Designer, your work will include, but not be limited to

  • Be a driver for the whole user centred design process - from discovery and analysis, to design, prototyping and evaluation
  • Perform explorative research and work closely with the product manager and the engineering team to identify users research questions and design problems to tackle
  • Perform concept validation with our users in the factories and iterate your design from simple wireframes to hi-fi prototypes
  • Design and evaluate solutions that focus on usability and accessibility for expert users
  • Develop a deep understanding of the domain to find creative solutions to the design challenges
  • Communicate your research and design work, through various artefacts, to engineers in your team to create empathy with the end-users and to discuss the feasibility of your ideas
  • Present your research and design work in a visual and pedagogical manner, to inspire and motivate a wide range of decision-makers and stakeholders

Our users are right now mainly based in Stockholm, Västerås, and Skellefteå and you can be based where ever your wish as long as you are as eager as we are to maintain close collaboration and relationship with them. However, this job is not possible to perform fully remote - we cherish meeting up with the team and meeting our users often!

About the company

Northvolt makes green batteries for a blue planet. Affordable cells and high-quality battery systems. All manufactured with a record-low carbon footprint. Purposely built to provide Europe with the opportunity to switch to renewable energy – efficiently and entirely.

To accomplish this, we do things differently. We design, manufacture, and recycle everything under one roof. We even build our own factories. All this is incredibly challenging and requires us to think in unconventional ways. We’re constantly experimenting, learning and adapting to make batteries so great – they will one day make oil history.

Northvolt is growing fast. We’re staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We're also hiring for our gigafactory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden. We want to work with smart individuals from all disciplines. Strong individuals that truly want to make a positive impact on the future. Those of us already on board share a passion for our mission. We’re prepared to work hard in pursuit of excellence. We enjoy the ride and our main drive is to make a difference for real. As a team, we’re dedicated to thinking new, working hard and having fun.
