We are now looking for a new Trade Commissioner to head up the office and to be part of growing our footprint and presence in Hong Kong. Business Sweden has supported Swedish businesses in Hong Kong with strategic advice and its local network since 1982. Together with our colleagues in China, the office in Hong Kong also covers Macao and southern China.

Hong Kong is one of the most important international trade and finance centres in the world, and its economy relies largely on these activities. Some of the most significant sectors are retail, logistics, financial services, professional services, and tourism.

There are currently around 180 Swedish companies present in Hong Kong. Thanks to its cultural and geographical proximity and the free-trade agreement with the Chinese mainland (CEPA), it also acts as an important gateway and business operation centre for many companies in China. Hong Kong is also a critical part of the Greater Bay Area, which is of high interest to Swedish companies from a sourcing, innovation and market perspective.

What do we expect from you?

As a Trade Commissioner, you will have responsibility for sales and delivery and for developing the Business Sweden staff (five employees). You will be based in Hong Kong and report to Joakim Abeleen, Market Area Director for Greater China based in Beijing.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Representing interests of Swedish enterprises and Business Sweden in the market
  • Selling and marketing Business Sweden's services to existing and potential clients in both Sweden and in the Greater China region, including add-on sales in on-going projects
  • Maintaining continuous contact with existing and potential client enterprises and stakeholders
  • Managing, planning and participating in the execution of consulting/ internationalisation assignments
  • Full Profit & Loss responsibility
  • Management of the office and employees, inspiring and developing the team.
  • Developing business processes and organization
  • Operating from a global perspective to promote Swedish industry and companies
  • Work in a Team Sweden context with the transition from aid to broader cooperation, coordinating export promotion initiatives with development cooperation (Team Sweden consist of Consulate General, Swedish Chamber of Commerce and other actors working with promotion of Swedish business)

  • Collaboration with trade promotion organisations in the other Nordic countries around events and programmes

You will have very close relations to the Swedish representations in the market. This means that you will be an official representative for Sweden, acting in close collaboration with the Swedish Foreign Service and other organisations.

Skills & Requirements

  • You have an academic degree within Business Administration and/or Engineering
  • You have at least 10 years of relevant working experience
  • You are a strong leader and have experience of management of employees
  • You have an interst in growing and developing talent
  • You have performed successful strategic sales and have a proven track record of developing customers, deep customer insight and strong negotiation and closing skills
  • You are analytical, reflective, focused and action oriented
  • You have in depth experience from multi stakeholder projects, including government clients (Swedish and non-Swedish)
  • A high level of proficiency in both written and spoken English and Swedish is a requirement
  • Experience from living/working in Hong Kong and/or China is meriting

You are perceived as a strong leader and have an outstanding ability to build personal relations, empathy and trust. You have a vision and a strong drive to develop Business Sweden’s operations in Hong Kong and Greater China even further. You furthermore have excellent organisation, communication and problem solving skills as well as an ability to handle multiple priorities.
