We’re currently looking for an additional Unit Lead who will play a key role in building up one of our Cloud & Web sub-department units. Are you ready to help millions of people think better?

About the role

The Cloud sub-department is one of six departments in the Technology department. It currently consists of about 40 people, and is a good mix of seniority, fields of expertise, and professions. This is a growing number. As we continue to expand, we want to carry on securing top talent to meet our new projects and demands. Today we have three units in the Cloud sub-department. Your unit would come in addition to that and consist of 8 engineers or more over time, in line with your capacity.

As an Unit Lead, you would play the part of a hands-on line manager in a matrix-style organization and report to the VP Cloud. Your core tasks would be building your own unit and empowering talents on a daily basis. Here you will also be in charge of performance, retention, and recruitment. We see it as essential that you can immerse yourself to a certain extent into the technical tasks your direct reports work on; the nature and depth of this work might vary based on several factors, such as your experience and interests or the profiles of people reporting to you.

You would allocate your direct reports to various cross-functional teams across the organization. You will be responsible for their well-being, development, and ongoing fit in the company. You would not be directly running projects or tending to regular agile team routines, which are the responsibility of project managers and project directors. You would collaborate with them: staffing their teams, advising them on technical strategy, collecting their feedback, and addressing people issues, amongst other things.

Further tasks and responsibilities

  • Doing a bit of technical work to learn, role model, and have perspective in discussions

  • Building bridges with peer managers and functions, such as UX, QA, C++, or Embedded

  • Attracting and recruiting talent as a hiring manager, as well as motivating acquired talent

  • Conducting 1:1s and performance reviews to develop your reports professionally

  • Balancing the needs and opportunities of individuals versus those of the company as a whole

  • Cultivating creativity, informal knowledge arenas, and inspiring others to share

  • Keeping an eye on overall technical quality and agility: ensuring good trade-offs

Who are you?

You have a few years of experience leading engineers and developing people. As such, you strive when nurturing people and watching them grow; you are also inclusive and can positively engage groups. You are well-versed in recruitment, comfortable acting as a hiring manager, and eager to win the best talent in the market. In addition to the people side of the job, you should have a technical background and understanding: ideally, you have been involved with cloud engineering, DevOps, or software development before moving on to management.
