Master Thesis 2018: Machine Learning Friction Drop Detection

NIRA Dynamics AB develop innovative software-based functions to the global vehicle industry. The current flagship is the Tire Pressure Indicator (TPI), which is the market-leading indirect tire pressure monitoring system currently activated in more than 35 million vehicles worldwide. TPI uses signals already available in the vehicle, and detects if one or more tires are under-deflated. The computations are based on vehicle models and numerous advanced signal processing and sensor fusion algorithms. Other products are now also emerging, like the NIRA Tire Grip Indicator (TGI) mainly driven by vehicle connectivity and autonomous driving.

Are you into signal analysis and machine learning…

… then we have a challenging problem for you to investigate! For the autonomous cars of the near future, it will be critical to know how quickly the vehicle can maneuver or stop in case of an emergency. Using neural networks or other machine learning methods of your preference, you should develop, implement, train and evaluate an algorithm for detecting sudden drops of friction potential between the vehicle and the road. Available to you will be raw vehicle signals such as wheel velocities and accelerometers, as well as refined intermediary models of vehicle dynamics.

Skills & Requirements

  • The project assumes good knowledge in signal processing and machine learning.
  • Appropriate educational background is studying at a Master's program with specialization D, E, F, Y, Z, or equivalent with a strong focus on signal processing, sensor fusion and/or machine learning.
  • We expect you to have a strong academic record and that you are driven and can take initiative and work independently.
