About MEST: MEST provides a 12-month Entrepreneur-in-Training (EIT) program, which infuses African tech enthusiasts with a combination of hard IT and practical business skills, equipping them to build successful commercial tech companies. At the end of the program, teams have the opportunity to pitch for funding and a seat at the MEST Incubator.

Since its inception, the Meltwater Foundation has invested $20 million into the program, supporting aspiring African entrepreneurs through the training program and incubator. Over 350 individual entrepreneurs have graduated from the training program and over 30 tech companies have been launched via seed funding and mentorship from MEST.

While Accra, Ghana, will remain Headquarters for the training program, MEST is forging strong roots and establishing incubators in major cities across the continent. MEST currently has a footprint in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. This year the program also welcomed its first Francophone entrepreneurs from Cote d’Ivoire.

About the Position: Your chief responsibility as Partnerships & Fundraising Associate will be business development and closing of strategic partnerships / sponsorships for MEST. Core need in is an aggressive and talented team player to drive these efforts and methodically prospect, propose and ultimately close development opportunities with target sponsors. In this role, you will:

  • Build strong ties with relevant external stakeholders, including investors, corporates, banks, telcos, foundations, government, press and others.

  • Evaluate existing relationships, lay out landscape for target funding partners, develop pitch materials and actively approach these prospects and seek to close deals.

  • Work with the MEST management team to develop strategic roadmap of industries, categories, products, brands that align with MEST’s goals.

  • Create creative ways to monetize various programs at MEST (visitor / tour programs, custom accelerators/incubators, sponsorships, grants, awards, incentive packages).

  • Close a minimum of five (5) new high profile and high impact deals across industries, and categories per year.

  • Track the African tech landscape, connecting the dots between what’s going on in the ecosystem, and how the opportunities can be relevant to MEST.

  • Work closely with the MEST cross-functional team in Ghana, US, UK, South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria.

  • You will report directly into Katie Sarro, Head of Partnerships & Fundraising.

  • You will spend 75% of your efforts on opportunities in the South African market, with the emphasis on MEST’s Cape Town Incubator.

    • Grow the Network: Build out a network of key stakeholders, including multinationals, government, investors, telcos, financial institutions, etc.

    • Lead Activations: Run 3-5 events monthly to grow our brand in SA and to build out our community of mentors, specialists, and investors.

    • Create a Community: Ensure the space is a profitable, thriving community and the #1 choice for startups looking for a place to call home, as well as corporates, investors and other stakeholders seeking to engage with the most innovative startups in South Africa.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Business or equivalent

  • 5 years of mid to senior level business and partnership development experience

  • A proven track record of success with experience in prospecting and negotiating deals worth $1M or more

  • A track record of creating unique concepts, campaigns or promotional extensions which can be attributed to you

  • Ability to react quickly and provide strategic solutions in a fast paced environment

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, especially speaking public

  • Solid problem solving and analytical skills

  • Ability to work well in a team based, matrixed environment

  • Experience leveraging CRM tools for deals and post-deal fulfillment
