Community Manager

The Community Manager role is truly a jack-of-all trades role involving marketing & PR, social media, sponsorships, events and community/ecosystem development.

S/he will also play a significant role in working with the Marketing and Recruitment teams at MEST.

The primary goal of the Community Manager is to make the MEST space a profitable, thriving community and the #1 choice with start-ups looking for support and a place to call home, as well as corporates and investors and other stakeholders seeking to engage with the most innovative startups in Nigeria.

In addition to housekeeping of the space and retaining a vibrant community of tenants, partners and sponsors are of the highest priority. In this role, you’d be helping the team to build and maintain a powerful network of entrepreneurs, mentors, specialists, and investors across the Africa, US, UK and beyond and charged with establishing and maintaining meaningful partnerships (and monetary sponsorships). You’d also be responsible for closing high impact partnership and sponsorship deals in Nigeria. This is certainly a team effort, and you’d be liaising with staff in UK, US, Nairobi, Accra and Cape Town to share information, discuss sponsor and partner leads, and to make use of synergies across Africa + support the mission of MEST.

Skills & Requirements

Operations & Admin

  • As a director of the co-working space - you will set the tone of the space. You know who’s coming in and out, know everyone by name, what their company does, and strive to always connect the dots and encourage interaction between tenants. And you innately possess the ability to connect with entrepreneurs, getting to know the intricacies of their business and promoting their products to investors and corporates alike.

  • Liaise startups/tenants to keep them informed of developments, news, or other informal interactions that may enhance or disrupt their experience.

  • Support and respond to all entrepreneurs on an ongoing basis to ensure use of both desk space and meeting areas are maximized.

Community & Culture

  • Assist with building out the design, culture, policies, practices, rituals of our office to be the most effective working and meeting space for our entrepreneurs, team, and a wider community.

  • Lead Activations: Run 3-5 events monthly to grow our brand in Nigeria and to build out our community of mentors, specialists, and investors.

  • Collaborate with team to develop sessions and events which engage colleagues and programs to support entrepreneurs.

  • Design and deliver entrepreneur networking and outreach events and sessions that support community building and brand building.

  • Grow the Network: Build out a network of key stakeholders, including multinationals, government, telcos, financial institutions, investors, etc.

  • Drive and support collaborative initiatives among members of the community.

Revenue-Generation (Tenant Occupancy & Venue for Hire)

  • Run the space as a commercial entity, whereby the rental of desks and the space as hire for the venue is a top priority.

  • Create and execute a marketing strategy for bringing in new tenants. Ensure the occupancy levels are consistently at capacity and bringing in revenue.

  • Create and execute a marketing strategy for the "venue for hire".


  • Close a minimum of five (5) new high profile and high impact deals per year

  • Work closely with MEST Marketing on the creation of all marketing ideas and collateral required to support the business development pipeline, pitches and process from strategic to tactical including creative ideas, presentations, case studies and promotional and sponsorship opportunities

  • Working with MEST’s Fundraising & Sponsorship team, you will prospect and cultivate partner relationships in Nigeria.

    • Develop a roadmap for engagement across industries, categories, products, and brands that align with MEST in Nigeria.

    • Develop an effective business development process including objectives, strategies and key milestones and execute that strategy

  • Liaise with potential sponsors (multinationals, government, telcos, financial institutions, investors) and actively seek out perks & in-kind resources for the space.

  • Identify, target and outline MEST’s value proposition to prospective partners.

Social Media, PR, Marketing & Events

  • Working with MEST’s Marketing & Communications team, you will position and brand the space as a hub for business, entrepreneurship, and new technologies.

  • Continually build awareness of the MEST Incubator brand through 360 marketing campaigns (press stories, social media & events) and corresponding tactics.

  • Assist in strategizing and updating Nigeria PR plan and calendar.

  • Maintain Nigeria press lists and update Nigeria-specific collateral.

  • Develop and foster key relationships with Nigerian media, digital influencers, and VIPs.

  • Create strategies and build buzz around brand extensions, partnerships and collaborations

  • Unleash Storytelling: Develop content for ongoing management of the spaces social media pages, one monthly internal and external newsletter as well as at least 1 piece of external content (text, photos, etc) for every event held

    • Photography, video, interviews and writing as well as other forms of storytelling, and strategically incorporate these stories into overall marketing campaigns and social media messaging.
    • Consistently create programming that connects the MEST Incubator members to the best startups, entrepreneurs, and emerging technology.
    • Engage with MEST Marketing team to regularly share content and announcements from the other MEST incubator locations.

EIT Recruitment

  • Work with MEST’s Head of Recruitment to develop a Nigeria-specific strategy for recruiting EITs

  • Assist with phone screenings, interviews, and hold in-person EIT recruitment events as needed.​


  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • 5+ years of mid to senior level marketing, partnerships and /or business development experience. Experience in startups and tech ecosystem a plus.

  • Experience in driving communications programs and platforms.

  • You have experience in major event production across a variety of types of experiences, partners, and audiences.

  • A track record of creating unique concepts, campaigns or promotional extensions which resulting in the creation of partnerships, positive press, and brand enhancement.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, especially speaking public


  • You have an appreciation for entrepreneurship, building communities and a brand.

  • The ideal candidate will possess both right and left brain skills; with the ability to develop creative solutions to marketing challenges and then execute flawlessly.

  • A person that is comfortable and confident sitting toe-to-toe with CEOs of Fortune 500 companies as well as a level of approachability and entrepreneurship that can also be comfortable with a start-up CEO.
