HOW IT WORKS

  • Get Matched: Apply and get matched with a VFA startup partner in your area of interest.

  • Get Immersed: Spend 3 months in this role, during which you will be immersed in the local context, get plugged into the right networks, and get to understand market nuances.

  • Get Working: Work on real project deliverables for your assigned startup while being paid a stipend.

  • Get Hired: While full-time roles are not guaranteed, you are fast-tracked through ordinary application processes for available full-time roles with the startup after the experience.

Startup Partner:Farmz2U

Farmz2U is a food and ag-tech startup that helps farmers farm better using data. They support smallholder farmers with access to information and access to resources to scale local farming production.

Key Farmz2U offerings include:

  • Digital extension services: with data, providing farmers with advice on what to grow and how.
  • Digital loans: supporting farmers with access to affordable finance.
  • Marketplace for produce: ensuring farmers use quality assured inputs through input sourcing traceability.
  • Aggregated sales: increasing farmers' margins on harvested produce by facilitating direct sales to buyers.


Engagement Description

Farmz2u is scaling its operations nationally and regionally across Nigeria and Kenya with a focus on growing its revenue streams. The team is looking to bring on a Strategy and Operations lead who will be responsible for implementing Farmz2u’s strategic goals from a tactical perspective.

Key Deliverables

  • Supervise day-to-day operations across the Product, Engineering, Operations and Marketing teams.

  • Providing strategic advice on increasing revenue, improving employee engagement and optimizing limited resources.

  • Identify suitable supply-side partners for onboarding with whom Farmz2u can grow revenue traction and access additional capital not limited to grants and government facilities.

  • Support management team with relationship management of supply-side partners; financial providers, input providers and off-takers among others.

  • Develop farm data management program

    • Identify upselling opportunities for our current client base

    • Build up value creation through the farm-field level data developed on farmers’ activities

  • Develop the cluster management program

    • Headhunt farm cluster leaders to manage farm cluster groups and develop a ‘performance-based incentive’ package.

    • Manage relationships with farm cluster leaders and monitor the performance of individual farm cluster groups.

  • Provide metrics of user engagement, revenue traction, and user issues raised & resolved.

Skills & Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional experience in business operations, domestic resource mobilization, and practical/research experience in agribusiness

  • Operational creativity to think about how to develop and sustain an organization

  • A willingness to roll up your sleeves and help the team get work done as they are a growing organization

  • Hands-on experience in strategic planning and business development

  • Experience in program development and execution with strong project management and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong influencing and stakeholder management skills with existing, or the ability to quickly establish, strong relationships with stakeholder individuals and groups at all levels across the firm

  • An innovative mindset with a willingness to execute fast and tactically

  • Can adapt, learn quickly and be resourceful; flexible, and willing to pivot to keep pace with evolving needs

  • Self-directed individual with a value for autonomy and freedom at work. Comfortable translating high-level goals into an actionable plan and can execute with minimal oversight
