Mentimeter serves hundreds of millions of users with services that we deploy roughly 40 times a week. With transaction loads of up to hundreds of votes per second, we have to ensure we can scale while still delivering a fast and smooth experience today and for the next hundred million users.

We are in an exciting phase where the platform must evolve to ensure continued performance, scalability, security, and maintainability. Likewise, we must facilitate our increasing number of different use cases, such as all online company meetings, online quizzes, etc.

We work in small, independent, self-organizing teams. The teams’ Product Manager and engineering lead work together to organize and plan the teams’ backlog using agile processes focusing on continuously delivering great features to our users. You will work together with your fellow engineers and engineering leads to achieve the company’s goals and targets.

What you will do

You will be part of a team that enables us to make the correct long-term and strategic decisions on what architecture and technologies are best suited for future challenges and we expect you to take on a leading role in these areas. These challenges include opening up a public API to help create an innovative ecosystem based on Mentimeter technology and integrations with various online meeting tools and learning systems.

As a Platform Engineer at Mentimeter, you should have both experience and knowledge in building large-scale, business-critical systems with modern technologies. Your responsibilities will include the research, design, and implementation of features and services that can scale efficiently and reliably together with other engineers in our Platform Team. Your job will be to create technological and infrastructural capabilities that will enable both your own and other cross-functional value streams to quickly build scalable, secure, and reliable technical solutions.

It is important to note that while this role will include technical evangelization, architectural, and strategic tasks, we expect you to work on improving our platform, and supporting the Product Teams.

Your responsibilities

Together with the team, team lead, and other technical leaders, you will help shape our tech vision and long-term architecture. You will collaborate closely with the Product Manager to find the best solution for each challenge as well as to implement features that ensure the long-term stability of our system and the quality of the code.

As mentioned, this is a hands-on role and we expect you to balance discovery phases with implementation work and housekeeping of existing systems and code.

You and the team are the experts that influence which tools, programming languages, and technologies you and the rest of the organization work with. This will include a continuous two-way dialogue with developers and you will likely have to present your ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Skills & Requirements

We believe you have

Several years of relevant work experience involved in building modern, high performing web-services using some of the techniques we use (see below).

A passion for software development, scalable architecture, knowledge sharing, and building amazing products. Somewhere in your career, you gained experience in database modeling and performance optimization and a strong interest in testing, automation, and code quality.

Clear and effective communication skills and that you work well both independently and in a team. Preferably you have an academic background but this is not a hard requirement.

Either already worked as an architect but miss being hands-on or consider becoming an architect in the future.

Technologies you'll be exposed to at Mentimeter

Mentimeter is a high transaction system built in React, Redux, Ruby, Node.JS and Go with a PostgreSQL database for persistence, Redis for caching and queuing, AWS Redshift for Business Intelligence, CloudFlare, and WebSockets to enable a fast and interactive polling experience.

Hosting is done on Heroku and AWS with Continuous Integration using Cypress.io, Concourse and other tools. We also utilize Next.JS for our static content sites to be able to deliver a blazing fast experience for our end users.
