Volvo Cars is one of the most well-known and respected automotive brands in the world. Northvolt is a leading supplier of sustainable, high-quality battery cells and systems, dedicated to delivering the world’s greenest lithium-ion battery. Together, we have formed a joint venture to power the next generation of pure electric Volvo and Polestar cars.

Few industries offer as great an opportunity for career growth and personal development as the new European battery industry. In working for this joint venture, you'll not only develop skills that are highly sought after in the global automotive and industrial sector, but you'll also make a concrete impact in creating a climate-neutral way of life for future generations.

We are building a state-of-the-art facility for research and development of the next generation of battery cells, and we need your help in making it happen. If you have engineered complicated production lines from scratch, this opportunity as Senior Software & Systems Engineer is for you.

Key responsibilities

  • Conceptualize, develop, and deliver an R&D database and supporting software that handles a wide range of incoming data streams, from battery testers to SEM images to manually-entered form data.
  • Based on fast-changing internal requirements and ever-improving industrial practices and products, deliver responsive changes and refactors to the database and supporting software.
  • Architect and own robust, secure back-end data pipelines and storage. Create responsive front-end software for R&D teams to use, from manual data entry forms to no-code database queries to dynamic graphs and charts.
  • Make complex build-vs-buy decisions about software systems, and always be able to back up your decisions with data and clear communication. Translate underdefined problem statements from throughout the organization into actionable requirements specs.
  • Fix things when they break. While this role will not involve consumer-facing production software, it is essential for our data pipelines to provide high uptime and data integrity.
  • When necessary, work with outside vendors, service providers, and contractors to get projects delivered on time.
  • Personally invest in creating an inclusive, collaborative working environment with teammates from all over the globe. Help onboard new teammates with clear communication, shared goals, and mutual trust.

If you're the right person for this role, you are goal-oriented, curious, and persistent in solving problems at their root causes. You're passionate about owning software projects for the long haul, using your skills to enable others, and working at the forefront of automotive battery research.

Skills & Requirements

Education and experience

  • At least 5 years of practical software/database engineering experience
  • A B.S. or higher degree in software engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Firsthand experience that has informed your intuition for robust, reliable data pipelines, from back-end storage all the way to client-side interfaces.
  • Firsthand experience with best practices in software devops workflows and version/deployment control tools, such as Git or Subversion.
  • Strong knowledge of the range of available on-prem and cloud-based data management systems and their relative benefits.
  • Ability to write software code and scripts, where needed, to automate processes and connect data pipelines.
  • Experience ingesting/parsing messy, disparate data streams and integrating them together into a coherent platform.
  • You’ve been through multiple iterations of beginning-to-end bringup of new software, from specification all the way to production deployment.

Skills and attributes

  • Excellent English written and oral skills; Swedish is a plus. You are skilled at communicating complex technical ideas clearly.
  • Eager to learn and understand the challenges unique to battery R&D and production, and then apply your own skills to overcoming those challenges.
  • Fearlessly hands-on in solving problems. When something breaks, there's no scope that's too minor and no root cause too improbable for you to dig into personally.
  • Highly organized and result-driven. You're proactive in solving problems and preempting delays in projects.
  • You bring a “can do” attitude and an entrepreneurial spirit to your daily work.
  • You produce high-quality work under pressure and with underdefined inputs. You're self-directed and manage time proactively.
  • Qualities that we cherish are flexibility, sense of quality, friendliness, motivation to take on new challenges, grit, and a sense of humor.
  • Passionate and purpose driven - we enable the future of energy.
