Site Reliability Engineer

Mentimeter’s vision is to transform presentations and meetings into fun and interactive experiences by making it easy to listen and to be heard. To achieve this vision, we must meet the demands of our current 200 million user-base, and scale to meet the needs of the next 200 million. The DevOps team at Mentimeter will enable our growing product department to work in a way that makes this possible.

If a presentation fails because of Mentimeter, we wouldn’t expect them to use our service again. Your main task as an SRE will be to work with other teams to improve their reliability strategy. You will collaborate a lot with other engineers as a sounding board, an advisor, a mentor, an incident handler, or be part of implementing things by pair programming.

You are continuously looking for bottlenecks in our infrastructure and suggesting ways to address them. Sometimes you might fix them by creating new tools, but not always. When operations take a turn for the worse, you will be a part of active incident resolution, and push for a long-term resolution by taking the lead in post-mortems.

For everything we do at Mentimeter, we strive to automate and simplify. We keep our platform advanced enough to support our main use cases while keeping its complexity and maintenance cost low. If there is an external provider or SaaS that provides a good solution, we tend to choose it over building one ourselves. We like to spend our time developing what matters, rather than what others have already made. For example, we currently prefer to use Heroku and Datadog rather than Kubernetes and Prometheus. We hope that you share this vision and help us to strike the right balance in these discussions going forward.

We believe that DevOps cannot be performed in a vacuum. The best ways to improve engineering culture are to spread knowledge and good practice through the organization, and to reduce work through automation. We are therefore looking for team members who are technical enough to automate processes where possible and passionate enough to demonstrate to others the value of their craft.

You will have a unique opportunity to shape our SRE strategy in the long run, helping us choose what technologies and structure to use as we continue to scale.

Work with great people

Front-end Developer
"Dog videos vs. Cat videos is the ever ongoing fight of Internet. Soner has clearly picked a side: Doggos. The cuter and hairier the better."
Business Development Director - Sales
"All the way from Italian metropolitan via small town of Switzerland to Stockholm to be a part of the Menti-family. It's like it was written in the stars (check the cancer sign)."
Product Manager
"Anna is a Stockholmer and a part of the Mentimeter KTH alumni crew. When she's not innovating at Mentimeter, she's doing jumping jacks on the handball court or partying in the USA."
Head of Brand
"As a kid Carl wanted to be a fashion designer, but ended up doing the next best thing - branding and PR. When he's not at Menti he's touring Sweden with his cover band (apparently they're terrible)."

Skills & Requirements

We believe you have:

We believe that you have a few years of relevant working experience and an academic background, although not strictly required. It is good if you have used tools like Datadog or Sentry and if you have some fluency in Javascript. You might have thoughts around frontend monitoring or tooling. You should be an excellent communicator as part of the job is to enable others rather than solving the problems for them. You have a passion for software development, scalable architecture, and product building and at the same time, you like to help others grow and learn.

Not required:

You don’t have to know Swedish (we are an English-first organisation, everyday work is in English and the Mentimeter team currently boasts over 40 different nationalities!)

More about Mentimeter

Mentimeter is a product-first, tech-heavy, fast-growing, inclusive and profitable startup built by engineers. Back in 2014, we felt that boring and inefficient meetings had to go, so we decided to create a platform to change this. Six years later, Mentimeter is recognized as the fastest-growing Swedish startup, with 200 million users and customers from over 150 countries; the journey has just begun.

Mentimeter is a high transaction system built in React, Ruby, Node and Go with a PostgreSQL database for persistence, Redis for caching and queuing, AWS Redshift for Business Intelligence, Cloudflare as a CDN, and WebSockets to enable a fast and interactive polling experience. We host on Heroku and use Github Actions and Concourse for CI. We monitor using Datadog.

Our core principles and basis for our culture:

  • Inclusiveness - transparency, equality and diversity

  • Work smart - good enough, but know when to excel

  • Professionalism - "the consultant mindset"

  • Be humble to other people’s work

  • Have fun

We at Mentimeter believe in giving everyone a voice - regardless of who you are. So we build a platform that does just that. Our platform is not only our product but also our organization. It is a platform where people feel safe, where differences are embraced, a place where you can have fun. We strongly encourage applicants who are people of color, LGBTQ, women, people with disabilities, and/or formerly incarcerated people, and a college degree is not strictly required. To give everyone a voice, we need to be as diverse as our users.

Not sure you meet 100% of our qualifications? Please apply, anyway!

With your application, please include a thoughtful cover letter explaining why you would enjoy working in this role and why you’d like to work at Mentimeter and an up-to-date CV.
