Volvo Cars is one of the most well-known and respected car brands in the world. Northvolt is a leading supplier of sustainable, high-quality battery cells and systems, dedicated to delivering the world’s greenest lithium-ion battery. Together, we have formed a joint venture to power the next generation of pure electric Volvo and Polestar cars.

Few industries offer as great an opportunity for career growth and personal development as the new European battery industry. In working for this joint venture, you'll not only develop skills that are highly sought after in the global automotive and industrial sector, but you'll also make a concrete impact in creating a climate-neutral way of life for future generations.

We are building a state-of-the-art facility for research and development of the next generation of battery cells, and we need your help in making it happen. If you have engineered complicated production lines from scratch, this opportunity as Lead R &D Engineer is for you.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop, commission, and own a wide range of foundational systems for a new R&D organization.
  • Resolve technical problems into actionable project plans: sourcing machines, specifying instrumentation, integrating new systems, and designing custom hardware to carry out industry-leading battery R&D.
  • From project scoping through facility integration through ongoing operational support, own the systems Northvolt-Volvo uses to solve new-to-the-world problems.
  • As the team grows, be able to transition seamlessly into leading a small team of engineers.
  • Work closely with other cross-functional teams and stakeholders to make sure product goals are being met on schedule.
  • Personally invest in creating an inclusive, collaborative working environment with teammates from all over the globe. Help onboard new teammates with clear communication, shared goals, and mutual trust.

If you are the right person for this role, you are goal-oriented, curious, and persistent in solving problems at their root causes. Your first-principles knowledge of engineering allows you to engage quickly with a wide range of new problems.

  • Applied experience with software-driven instrumentation systems, such as PLCs, LabVIEW, or microcontroller-driven circuits.
  • Experience handling complex, integrated, multidisciplinary engineering projects, encompassing mechanical systems, electronics, and software.
  • You’ve been through multiple iterations of beginning-to-end bringup of new equipment, from design/procurement all the way to operational handoff.
