Brand Director to world-renowned game studio

We are super proud to present an incredible job opportunity at Mojang Studios, the creators of Minecraft. We are looking for a Brand Director to join the cross-ocean leadership team. This role reports directly to the Head of the Stockholm studio.

At Mojang the Minecraft brand has always been driven from the heart of the game, adding complexity to the expectations of this role.

The Brand Director will help direct and define the Minecraft brand and how it informs the work both towards the products and beyond the game. You are the guardian of this purpose as the business strategy is constantly striving for innovation and renewal. You will balance internal culture (Mojang) and external perception (Mojang and Minecraft) with the cross-ocean Leadership team.

Crucial to this role is to put new processes in place where brand vision is set early on so that subsequent teams are able to steer new and large initiatives in the right direction as they work through execution. You will be responsible for setting a sound decision-making framework that can be utilized by anyone in the studio, regardless of their area of expertise.

You will head up the Brand Creative Group together with the Creative Director and the Production Director. Today, the group consists of about 40 team members ranging from creative leads, talented creative artists, producers, and writers.

You are a master communicator and a natural collaborator who excels at bridging
communication between cross studio as well as global teams and stakeholders. You have proven competency in building global brands and the core foundational elements that will propel a large-scale operation forward.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for Mojang’s and Minecraft’s official brand architecture, positioning, and strategy.
  • Together with Business and Marketing leads ensure updated, conducted, and analyzed research and data around brand awareness, brand health, target audience, markets, and industry trends are available and up to date.
  • Identify relevant insights, challenges, and most importantly opportunities for our brand in partnership with the leadership team.
  • Develop and present compelling brand strategies for new initiatives that solve business requirements.
  • Identify how Minecraft brand architecture and strategy works complementary to Mojang Studios brand and franchise strategy and pillars.
  • Support the new employee onboarding experience, specifically for the Minecraft brand.
  • Ensure the Brand Team successfully deliveries and implements an official Minecraft repository for key brand guidelines and assets.
  • Responsible to keep assets and guidelines current and updated.
  • Create a clear vision and objectives for the continued development of Brand
    Guidelines.
  • Support team departments with brand direction as needed throughout the project cycle.
  • Together with the Brand team assemble and lead a dedicated team and third-party partners as needed in order to deliver key brand projects and needs to company stakeholders.
  • Establish core brand KPIs and work within the leadership team on how to integrate these in all studio projects.
  • Establish framework and processes for cross-studio and cross-departmental
    collaboration on all things Brand.
  • Lead the Brand team to deliver on vision and goals and empower the wider studio to bring clarity in how their day-to-day work supports our brand purposes.
  • Develop internal guidelines that provide clarity between Mojang Studio and the
    Minecraft brand.
  • Generalized values (Mojang Studios or Minecraft) and inherent game knowledge and work them into tangible guidelines for our teams.
  • To help us better understand how to navigate day-to-day brand decision making
    regardless of whether you work on the studio or product/game level.

  • Marketing strategy or execution, advertising strategy, and execution, media planning and execution, Go-to-market planning or execution, channel strategy or execution.
  • Partnership & licensing strategy or management.
  • Product strategy or management.
  • Mojang Studios culture initiatives.
  • Employee communications.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of direct work experience building, sustaining, and leading a Brand
  • Previous experience working with building a global brand in the Entertainment or Game industries
  • Degree in business, marketing, branding, communications, or a related field. MBA is a plus.
  • Ability to inspire, coach, and lead a high-performing team while collaborating effectively with peers, and senior leadership.
  • Experience directing and managing multi-disciplinary internal and agency teams.
  • Ability to identify and apply critical consumer insights to brand development, with experience applying various research methodologies (both qualitative and quantitative) to the process.
  • Collaborative mindset.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills.
  • Plays Minecraft.
