To deliver on Northvolt’s vision and bold expansion plans we have established the Blueprint team. The team’s mission is to deliver a digital factory blueprint of a scalable, rapidly deployable, highly efficient world class battery factory. It constitutes a complete solution that spans process, equipment, materials, facility, utilities and people, with guidelines and tools needed for the establishment of a factory.

About the job

As a Design Manager, you will work in a cross-functional highly motivated team to drive the factory design and maintain and continuously improve the blueprint as the backbone for key building blocks of the large-scale battery factory.

You will also support and collaborate with the Northvolt cell factory programs in Europe and Worldwide to deploy and leverage the blueprint for a more efficient and speedy delivery. Your responsibilities will range from concept phase into the design phase as well as the execution phase, from drawing to working factory.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Drive and manage, together with a cross-functional team within Northvolt, the design of a key building block in our factory blueprint.
  • Set the direction and drive technical decisions on the design to ensure that the factory designs are competitive (cost/performance), modular, easy to ramp up, and possible to operate in a sustainable way.
  • Facilitate design reviews, manage the timeline of Blueprint upgrades and report results and basis of decision to all management levels.
  • Capture Lessons Learnt to address critical issues and prevent repeated mistakes while contributing to building a learning organization.
  • Support supplier dialogues and collaborate with procurement and R&D, to deeply understand requirements, opportunities, and trade-offs.
  • Develop & drive standards for key design documents.
  • Co-develop & collect key design documents (e.g. Technical Equipment Specifications, User Requirement Specifications).
  • Drive value engineering initiatives and seek continuous improvement together with Cell Development Projects, R&D and Advanced Process to upgrade the NV blueprint.
  • Evaluate new technologies and advise the organisation on appropriate investments.
  • Develop current and future Northvolt partners, e.g. integrators and installation partners.

Skills & Requirements

Qualifications/education/experience

  • A relevant university degree (B.Sc. / M.Sc. or similar) in engineering such as (but not limited to) process engineering, electrical or mechanical engineering, and industrial engineering.

  • At least 5+ years’ experience in technical roles in demanding fast paced environment.

  • Strong technical and project management experience within roles such as (but not limited to): Design engineer, Lead Engineer, Technical Project Management, Engineering or Operations Management.

  • Industrialisation experience, preferably from automotive, battery, semiconductor, or other relevant industry.

  • Exposure to Construction, Supply Base Management, Purchasing, Engineering and Manufacturing

  • Valuable experience in multi-cultural environment

  • Fluency in English

  • Valuable (but not required) if fluency in other languages (Japanese, Swedish, Chinese, French)
