Northvolt has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Process Quality Engineer to join our bold project teams in Västerås.

In joining us you will play an important part from the very start in enabling supply of the first large scale European battery factory. Northvolt will play an important role in the transformation to a carbon free society. We are continuously building a team of experienced Quality Engineers and great leaders with industry background.

You will be in charge of developing, defining and implementing the quality standards, procedures, Quality Control plans and quality management principles for the Cathode material manufacturing operations, initially reporting to the Head of Quality. You will also be responsible for reviewing quality of our new product in development and will work closely with R&D, Production and Process Engineering to follow-up and improve to ensure a flawless transition into manufacture and supply of our Li-ion cells. You are skilled in running Design of Experiments and DMAIC improvement projects to resolve difficult and complex problems and optimise our processes.

The Process Quality Engineer will be an expert in quality management which includes deep knowledge in quality systems, i.e. ISO9001 and IATF16949, quality process design, continuous improvement, quality control and assurance, process robustness, six sigma and monitoring of quality performance etc. You will play an important role to lead and co-ordinate quality monitoring and reporting, issue and crisis management as well as proactive quality planning and improvement. A background in metallurgy, inorganic chemistry or material science is a strong merit.

In general, you have a long experience in quality management and have been driving large, innovative and challenging improvement projects internally and with external partners in the area of quality, six sigma, qualification & validation, improvements, efficiency and optimisation. Specifically, you have a deep understanding of working and cooperating cross-functionally in a multicultural environment with R&D, Production, Maintenance, Process Engineering, IT and Automation.

The candidate should be analytical and logical with an ability to identify opportunities and improvements to drive increased quality through data driven approaches, i.e. six sigma and statistical methodologies. The candidate should have strong technical abilities in order to succeed in this role.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing PFMEA's, process flow charts and conducting MSAs
  • Defining and producing the Quality Control plans for each process operation
  • Set up quality monitoring procedures, quality KPI's, evaluate performance and make improvement proposals, i.e. Process capability: SPC and Cpk
  • Co-ordinate quality gate reviews in the Product Development process from start of design phase through to manufacturing of products
  • Oversee the Quality Control and testing plan, review results and process performance and initiate improvement projects
  • Lead trouble shooting and root cause analysis activities in relation to deviations and quality issues, e.g 8D and non-conformity investigations
  • Expert in complex problem solving and process optimisation, i.e skilled in DMAIC and DoE, multivariant data analysis etc.
  • Collaborate closely with Customer quality engineers to deliver required input to customer projects, e.g. PPAP documentation
  • Develop, implement and audit standard procedures and instructions
  • Facilitate DFMEA's and PFMEA's
  • Work across many parts of the organization, collaborating with the Battery
  • Systems organization, business development, technical, design and development teams, automation and external partners

Skills & Requirements

We believe that you have :

  • A degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry
  • 5+ years working experience in the Chemical Industry
  • Excellent English written and oral skills
    • Experience of quality management in relevant industry, e.g. battery, automotive, pharma, food, pulp & paper, FMGC
  • Knowledge of quality management systems, e.g. ISO 9001, IATF16949, TQM

  • Experience in developing processes, standards, procedures and documentation in an efficient way to ensure high quality products to meet customer requirements

  • Project management skills and a successful track record of leading quality improvement/six sigma projects in manufacturing and/or with suppliers

  • Experience from developing training and certification procedures and programs

  • Knowledgeable in Lean and six sigma
  • Expert in SPC, process capability, FMEA, Quality troubleshooting tools and problem solving methodology

Bonus points for:

  • Experience and interest in manufacturing industry
  • Fluency in other languages
  • Experience from a multi-cultural environment
