We are looking for a experienced Battery Modelling and Simulation Engineer to join us in our mission to contribute to a greener future. The role is a part of our passionate Vehicle integration team based in Västerås.  By joining us, you will be a key player in establishing up Battery solution and contribute to building one of the first large scale European battery factories.  

About the job

As the battery modelling and simulation engineer in the vehicle integration team you will be responsible for the development of system models that can express the behaviour of a cell, module and/or pack in mathematical form. Using Matlab/Simulink you will be create models that can be used to simulate the electrical and thermal performance of a module or pack and define the tests that are needed to correlate the models. You will act as a liaison between the cell team and the vehicle integration team to ensure we can jointly develop the best integrated solutions for our customers.

As a part of our Automotive team you will, together with dedicated international colleagues get the chance to build up a world class Automotive vehicle R&D group. Our main focus is the integration of the cell in a vehicle. We are located in Västerås and work close with our Cell R&D.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop a detailed system model at module or pack level which includes an electrical and thermal sub-model using physics-based modelling and equivalent circuit modelling in MATLAB and Simulink
  • Perform electrical performance simulations at module and/or pack level such as: capacity, energy efficiency, constant power, discharge power, drive profiles, fast charging etc.
  • Perform numerical simulations to identify performance limitations, optimize cell and module/pack design and develop novel battery management systems.
  • Develop aging models at module and pack level in coordination with the cell team.
  • Develop bespoke cell swelling models for prismatic cell formats.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including the Cell Design Team, Validation and Testing, CAE Team, etc., to plan and coordinate tests required for model parameterization and characterization.
  • Participate in customer meetings as the Vehicle Integration Team’s key expert on battery system modelling.
  • Provide BMS insights in early concept development for new and future integrated pack designs.

Skills & Requirements

We believe that you have:

  • Master’s Degree in Advance Control and Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Maths, Physics or Chemistry.

  • Min 3 years’ experience working with Battery Modelling or Battery Management Systems.

  • Experience working with MATLAB, Simulink, MIL test, HIL Test.

  • Capable of analyzing and creating power limit logics in MATLAB/Simulink

  • Experience with modelling of lithium-ion cells including Newman model, equivalent circuit and thermal model.

  • Strong understanding of the mechanical, electrical, and thermal systems in a battery pack.

  • worked on Automotive battery pack design and development from concept to production.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic start-up environment where initiative and ownership is a must.

Bonus points for: 

  • BMS knowledge
  • Experience with CAE battery simulation
  • Extensive algorithm design, implementation, calibration and code optimization experience.
  • Experience organizing and carrying out diagnostic tests on battery packs and modules.
  • Experience from a multi-cultural environment
