Do you have what it takes to enable the future of energy? Northvolt is right now looking for a Thermal/Mechanical Design Engineer for Battery System Development to join our team. You will be given the opportunity to develop li-ion battery modules, packs and systems as well as being a part of building one of the first European large-scale lithium-ion battery factories.

We are searching for a thermal/mechanical design engineer with experience of product developing with main focus on thermal management. You have preferably worked as a Design Engineer within the automotive, Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) or similar industry. You have also a good understanding of production processes and have a proven record of taking part in the full development thermal management products.

Main purpose of the role is to perform thermal analysis using industry standards and/or software to determine if product will meet product requirements and specifications and to analyze results based on first principles and advise improvements. Furthermore, the role heavily needs excellent experince in using 3D CAD software to creating designs and drawings from scratch based on concepts and standards. The candidate must have proven record on designing cooling systems such as vapor compression, heat exchanger, air cooling; in addition to designing piping systems for liquid cooling.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and Development Support in area of battery thermal management for Northvolt li-ion battery modules and packs by using 3D CADs software
  • Design product and components to meet internal and external specifications with strong consideration to safety
  • Analyze and interpret customer requirements to determine feasibility of product proposal
  • Ensure the fulfillment of all applicable guidelines, regulations and compliance measures
  • Execute engineering tasks defined within projects in order to meet schedule, budget and specifications

Safety, energy density and total cost of ownership are key drivers for battery system development which should be mastered and understood. It is an advantage to be familiar with international standards and testing procedures commonly accepted in the li-ion battery industry.

Skills & Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferably with flow and thermal focus on courses or thesis or related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience to perform at this level
  • 4-8 years of Thermal systems experience in thermal design, analysis and hardware
  • At least 3 years of experience from designing (incl. CAD), installing (hands on) and maintaining cooling systems for harsh environments
  • Experience from selecting all relevant components for cooling systems (pumps, compressors, expansion tanks, heat exchangers, fans, piping/tubing, filters etc.)
  • Capability to develop conceptual thermal designs, perform trade studies, and deselect to a design baseline
  • Skills to establish thermal requirements and interfaces with project partners inside and outside of Northvolt
  • Preferably experience from high speed and large volume manufacturing industries
  • Strong computer aided design skills and experience with 3D parametric CAD design tools
  • Great communication skills as you will be in constant interaction with team members and prospective customers
  • Experience working with international colleagues and customers
  • Excellent English written and oral skills
  • Ability to work under high pressure and tight deadlines, excellent time management
  • Strong organization skills and used to manage a range of activities simultaneously
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment, as well as independently
  • Ability to work in a high profile and often high-pressured environment (start-up)

Northvolt was founded in 2016 with the mission to build the world’s greenest battery cell, with a minimal carbon footprint and the highest ambitions for recycling, to enable the European transition to renewable energy. Northvolt’s team of experts is building the next generation battery cell factory focused on process innovation, scale and vertical integration.
