In September 2019, the Volkswagen AG and Northvolt AB signed a 50/50 joint venture to enable a sustainable transport future. The partnership will establish a lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Salzgitter, Germany. Northvolt Zwei takes its design from the Northvolt blueprint for battery manufacturing developed for Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå (northern Sweden, which will be Europe’s largest battery cell factory producing 32 GWh worth of capacity annually) and will be a state-of-the-art facility. Start of construction is planned for 2021 and start of operations at the beginning of 2024, initially adding 16 GWh of annual cell production capacity to Europe with intentions to increase capacity over time in order to meet future demand.

Northvolt Zwei will share much in common with its sister factory, Northvolt Ett, including a minimal CO2 footprint, heavily automated processes and advanced cell manufacturing techniques. It will produce lithium-ion cells exclusively for electric vehicles from the VW Group which will launch over the coming decade.
